The one question that decides your bill
Everything starts with whether the door was merely pulled shut or genuinely locked. A door that fell shut behind you, with the bolt not thrown, begins at 70 €. Once the key has been turned, or the key is gone, or the cylinder is faulty, the work moves into drilling or cylinder pulling and begins at 110 €. A high-security cylinder begins at 220 € because it takes longer and resists more. An electronic or motor lock begins at 300 €. If a cylinder has to be replaced, a standard one adds roughly 30 € on top.
Anfahrt, Notdienst, Zuschlag: reading a German invoice
Anfahrt is the drive out to you. Inside the core area it is part of the job; beyond it, the work begins at 90 € or travel is added from 20 €. Notdienst just means call-out service outside normal hours, not a separate tariff of its own. Zuschlag means surcharge, and mine is a flat 20 € between 22:00 and 09:00 and across weekends and public holidays. Any line beyond those deserves a question asked out loud before anybody signs anything.
How the nineteen-euro advert works
An advert promising a door open for 19 € is selling the phone call rather than the work. A dispatcher takes your address, an unfamiliar technician arrives, and the 19 € turns out to cover only the arrival while opening, surcharge and a mandatory replacement cylinder are billed separately, often well past 400 € in cash on the landing. Two habits protect you: insist on a total figure including surcharge and travel before anyone sets off, and ask for the name of the person who will actually be standing at your door.
Four things to sort out before you dial
Spend thirty seconds on this and the call becomes short. First, read the street name and house number off the building itself and note whether the flat is in the front house, the side wing or the rear courtyard, because a Berlin address is rarely one building. Second, push the handle down and watch the latch: if the door still refuses to move once the latch is retracted, the bolt is out and the door is locked, and that changes the price bracket. Third, think about how you will show that you belong there, whether by post with your name on it, a neighbour who recognises you, or a document kept at work. Fourth, if there is any battery left, take one photo of the whole door and one of the lock and send both by WhatsApp while we speak. With that, I can give you a price range and an arrival window instead of a guess.
Which districts I reach quickest
Charlottenburg is ten to twenty minutes. Wilmersdorf and Halensee run fifteen to twenty-five. Westend, Schmargendorf, Tiergarten, Hansaviertel and Moabit sit at twenty to thirty-five, and Schöneberg and Friedenau at twenty to forty. Spandau, Steglitz, Zehlendorf, Reinickendorf, Tegel and Grunewald are twenty-five to forty-five plus travel. If you are further out and someone nearer can be with you sooner, I will tell you that on the phone.

Not for a door that is only shut, where the non-destructive route is tried first. Drilling belongs to locked doors, lost keys and dead cylinders, and I announce it before starting rather than explaining it afterwards.
How fast can you actually get here?
Ten to twenty minutes in Charlottenburg, fifteen to twenty-five in Wilmersdorf and Halensee, up to forty-five plus travel at the edges of the city. The window I give you accounts for the job I am currently on.
Can I get something in writing for my landlord or insurer?
Yes. A proper Rechnung with the work, the parts and the surcharge itemised can be issued to you, to an employer, to a landlord or to an insurance company.

No. There is one person and one van, so if the phone is not answered immediately it means I am driving or working on a door. Trying again a few minutes later usually reaches me.
