Two German words that set the price
Zugefallen means the door simply fell shut. Abgeschlossen means it was locked with the key. I will ask which one applies, and if you are unsure, press the handle down and push: if the door holds firm with the latch pulled back, the bolt is out. The first case begins at 70 €, the second at 110 €, and no amount of fluent English moves that boundary.
What to photograph and send
Four pictures on WhatsApp save several minutes of vocabulary. Stand back far enough for the whole door with its frame and hinges, so the type of door is obvious. Then step close and photograph the cylinder head-on, the small oval of brass or nickel that the key goes into. Third, catch the strike plate on the frame where the latch and bolt meet the wood, or the edge of the door itself if it is open enough to show. Fourth, take one of the house number and the doorbell panel so I walk into the right entrance in a courtyard block. Send them together with the street and the floor typed underneath, and keep the phone free after that.
Your invoice, translated
Rechnung is the invoice itself. Türöffnung is the door opening. Anfahrt covers the drive out. Nachtzuschlag and Wochenendzuschlag are the flat 20 € out-of-hours addition. Zylinder is the lock cylinder and Ersatzzylinder the replacement one, from around 30 € for a standard model. MwSt. is value added tax. I go through the sheet with you in English before leaving, and I can explain any line again by message weeks later when a landlord starts asking.
Dealing with the Hausverwaltung afterwards
A Hausverwaltung is the company that manages the building, and in a rented Berlin flat it usually wants to know what was fitted to the door and why. That conversation can be handled in German on your behalf: what the door state was, which method was used, what part went in, and where the invoice should be sent. The same applies to a private landlord, a flat-share agency or an employer covering the cost.
Being locked out does not make you a suspect
Before any door is opened I need to see that you are entitled to be behind it, and that is normal everywhere, not a special hurdle for foreigners. A tenancy agreement on your phone, post addressed to you, a neighbour who knows your face or a housemate on speakerphone all work. Mentioning at the start of the call how you will prove it keeps everybody moving.

Questions about English speaking locksmith Berlin
Do I need to know the German word for what is broken?
No. Say it however it comes out, or send a photograph instead. Naming the part correctly is the locksmith's job.
Can I write on WhatsApp instead of phoning? I hate calling in Germany.
Message first if that is easier, with photos, the street and the floor. For anything urgent I will ring you back, because a live conversation settles the door state faster than typing.
Will the invoice be written in English?
The invoice is issued in German, since that is the version a landlord, insurer or employer here will accept without argument. Everything on it is explained to you in English on the spot.
My contract says I am not allowed to change the lock. What happens now?
A door that is only shut is opened and left exactly as it was, so nothing changes. If the cylinder had to be drilled, a replacement is unavoidable and the building management is told what went in, so you have a written record.
I am here on holiday and the key snapped in the flat door. Can you come?
Yes, provided somebody entitled to the flat can confirm access, whether that is the host, the agency or a booking in your name. Raise it in the first minute so nobody waits for a callback.
Does an English-speaking locksmith charge more?
No. The same rates apply in all four languages, including the flat 20 € for nights, weekends and public holidays.
