Savignyplatz · Charlottenburg

Savignyplatz after midnight, when the door has already shut.

A good share of the calls from this square arrive between ten at night and two in the morning, when dinner under the railway arches ends with the flat key still lying on the kitchen table. You ring the number and you reach the man who turns up.

Paul Gammershmidt, owner and working locksmith in Berlin

Fluent English · direct owner contact

You can speak to me in English.

I speak English fluently. I may initially answer the phone in German because I work in Berlin; simply speak to me in English and I will switch immediately. You speak directly with me—the locksmith who clarifies the door situation, explains the price components, travels to you, carries out the agreed work and issues the invoice.

What to expect

Clear emergency process, no mystery price game.

I ask what happened, where you are, whether the door is shut or locked, whether the key is inside or lost, and whether an invoice is needed. Then I give a realistic arrival and price range.

Simple shut door

Damage-minimising opening first if the latch can be reached.

Locked door / lost key

May require drilling, pulling or cylinder replacement after explanation.

Company invoice

Billing address, e-mail and service details can be recorded.

How a typical late call goes

You describe the door, I ask whether the handle still moves the latch and where the key is, and we agree a figure. Then I tell you when I can be there, which from this corner of Charlottenburg is usually a quarter of an hour or less. On arrival you get the same voice, the same face and the same name on the invoice, with no second firm appearing in my place.

The doors around the square

These blocks mostly went up between 1880 and 1905: tall timber street doors, deep rebates, courtyards behind, and flats that were subdivided at some point in the last century. Street doors have generally been fitted with modern cylinders, while individual flat doors vary wildly, from a simple latch to an old mortise lock with a second bolt. Ground-floor rooms turned into bars, agencies and shops add a further kind of door to the same address.

Parking, stopping bans and the last hundred metres

Around this square there is rarely anywhere legitimate to leave a vehicle, and the pavements stay busy well past midnight. It helps enormously if somebody meets me at the entrance instead of buzzing me in from four floors up, because the difference between a smooth arrival and ten wasted minutes is almost always the front door rather than the drive.

Why a nineteen-euro advert should worry you

Adverts promising a door open for 19 € are not selling a door opening. They are selling a callout that gets priced properly once the technician is standing in front of you, often through a hotline that passes the job to whoever answers. The protection is simple: get a total on the phone, in words you understand, before anyone is dispatched, and ask what will be added for arriving, for the hour of the day and for parts. On a German invoice the line marked Anfahrt is the journey itself, billed apart from the work, and that is the line which quietly grows.

Restaurants, hotels and small offices

This area is full of one-room agencies, practices and eateries whose keyholder is not the same person as the tenant. Where the door is not your own, I need the name of whoever can authorise work on it before anything begins, together with the billing details if the invoice goes to a company rather than a private person.

FAQ

Questions about emergency locksmith Savignyplatz

Do you charge more in the middle of the night?

There is one flat addition of 20 € for anything between 19:00 and 08:00, and the same 20 € applies right through weekends and public holidays. It does not scale with how long the job takes or how late the hour is.

What does Anfahrt mean on a German locksmith bill?

It is the travel to your address, billed as its own item. Inside the near core around Charlottenburg it is already contained in what I quote; further out the job is either priced from 90 € or carries travel from 20 €, and you hear which one applies before I drive.

The key is in the lock on the inside. Can the door still be opened?

Usually, though the method depends on the fitting and on how far the key was turned. Mention it on the phone, because a key left standing in the cylinder changes what will work and therefore what it costs.

Can you work with our building manager?

Yes. Property managers, landlords and agencies can commission the job and receive an invoice made out to them. Where the door is shared or belongs to somebody else, that authorisation has to be clear before I touch it.
