The distance question, dealt with first
The base is in Charlottenburg, at the other end of the city axis. Depending on the hour, crossing to Mitte takes anything from half an hour upwards, and the address lies outside the near core, so the job is quoted from 90 € or carries a journey charge from 20 €. If you need somebody at Alexanderplatz within fifteen minutes, I am not that person and will say so on the phone.
Courtyard blocks, gate codes and back staircases
A single street number around Torstraße or the Hackescher Markt can hide a front block, two courtyards and three staircases, some reached through a gate with a code. Have the code, the staircase and the floor ready. If the outer gate locks itself at night, arrange for someone to let me through, otherwise we both stand on the pavement while your patience drains away.
Short lets, holiday flats and borrowed keys
A large share of Mitte calls come from people staying somewhere that is not theirs. That is fine, but I still need something linking you to the flat: the booking confirmation, the host reachable by telephone, or a message thread showing the address. Where an agency manages the flat, it usually wants to be told before a cylinder is changed, and I would rather ask that question first than later.
How the classic rip-off is built
The pattern is consistent enough to describe. An advert or a map listing shows a very low figure. The number reaches a call centre that employs no locksmiths, and the job is sold on to whoever is free. The technician arrives, opens a door that was only on the latch, and produces an invoice of several hundred euros assembled from items nobody mentioned: an emergency supplement, a weekend supplement, a per-minute rate, parts you never agreed to. It works because you are stressed and standing in a corridor. One question defeats it: what is the total, including everything, before you leave?
What binding means here, and the tax question
In Germany a price named before the tradesman sets out is an offer you accept by booking, and it holds. I will not quote until you have told me enough about the door, and after that the number stands. There is also no tax to come: the business is registered under the small-business rule of § 19 UStG, so invoices are issued without value added tax and nothing is appended at the end. Newcomers often assume a further nineteen per cent is lurking somewhere, and here it is not.
Companies, hotels and offices
Practices, agencies, hotels and offices in Mitte can order urgent work and receive a proper invoice with the legal name, the billing address and a cost centre where the accounts department needs one. On premises with motorised or electronically controlled locks, expect work from 300 €, and tell me the make of the system if you know it so that I arrive carrying something useful.

Are you based in Mitte?
No. There is one base, at Leibnizstraße 25 in Charlottenburg, and no branches anywhere. A firm claiming a local office in every district is describing a marketing map, not a workshop.
What will it cost to get you to Torstraße?
The job is quoted from 90 €, or from 70 € plus a journey charge from 20 € where the door has only fallen shut. A locked door, a lost key or a dead cylinder starts at 110 €. The exact total is agreed while we are on the phone.
The advert said 19 euro and I was charged four hundred. Was that legal?
It is at best disputable, and you are not obliged to pay quietly. Ask for an itemised invoice, pay under protest in writing if you must, and take the paperwork to the Verbraucherzentrale. The advertised figure and the sum demanded on site rarely bear much relation to each other.
I have locked myself out of a holiday flat. Can you help?
Yes, provided you can show the booking and, where possible, reach the host. Altering anything on the lock of a rented flat needs the owner’s agreement, but getting you back through a door that has merely shut usually does not.
How can I settle the bill at three in the morning?
Card, cash or invoice, all three work at any hour, and the total is the one we fixed before I drove over.
