What the surcharge covers, and what it does not
The night and weekend addition is twenty euros, full stop. It sits on top of the 70 € for a door that fell shut or the 110 € once the door is locked, a key is lost or a cylinder has failed. It does not multiply the base rate, it does not grow with the hour, and it does not appear twice because Saturday night is both a weekend and after 22:00. Firms that quote a night rate as a percentage rather than a number are usually planning for the percentage to surprise you.
Arrival times that hold up at night
Empty roads help, but the ranges stay much the same: ten to twenty minutes in Charlottenburg, fifteen to twenty-five in Wilmersdorf and Halensee, twenty-five to forty-five plus travel out towards Spandau, Tegel or Zehlendorf. What actually changes after midnight is whether I am already under another door somewhere in the west.
What one van at 3 a.m. really means
A rota of technicians can promise permanent cover; a single operator cannot, and says so. Most nights the phone is answered. On the nights it is not, I am either driving, working or asleep, and the honest version of that is worth more to you at three in the morning than a booking taken by someone who will not be arriving.
What to say when you ring in the middle of the night
Open with the street and house number, then the district, because those two decide whether the drive is fifteen minutes or fifty. Say whether the door is shut or locked. Say whether you are inside the building or out on the pavement, and whether you are on your own, since that moves the job up or down the queue. Give a number that will still have battery in twenty minutes, or the number of whoever is standing with you. If a neighbour has already let you into the stairwell, mention it, because waiting in a warm hallway is not the same as waiting in February on Kantstraße. Then put the phone down and let it ring rather than calling four more firms: if the answer was yes, the van is already moving, and a busy line only slows the callback.
Waiting alone until the van arrives
Stay where there is light and other people rather than in an unlit courtyard: a petrol station, a hotel lobby, a night bakery or a busy street entrance all work. Tell somebody where you are and when help is due. If a stranger offers to slip the lock with a card, decline politely, because the damage and the conversation with your landlord afterwards will be yours alone. If the situation feels genuinely unsafe rather than simply annoying, ring 110; that is what the number is for.

Is it genuinely 24 hours or does nobody answer at night?
The phone is on through the night and most calls are answered. Since this is one person rather than a rota, you occasionally get a no, and you get it immediately instead of after an hour of waiting.
What exactly does a call-out at 2 a.m. cost extra?
Twenty euros on top of the normal price for the job. A shut door at two in the morning is 90 € all in, a locked one 130 €, before any travel to an outlying district.
It is Sunday lunchtime, not night. Do I still pay the surcharge?
Yes. Weekends and public holidays carry the same flat 20 € at any hour of the day.
Would I be better off waiting until morning?
Twenty euros is the whole difference, so if you are warm, safe and have a sofa to sleep on, waiting is a reasonable choice and I will say so. If you are outside with nowhere to go, do not sit on a step for six hours to save it.
Do you come out at night for a locked door as well, or only a shut one?
Both. A locked door, a lost key or a broken cylinder at night is charged from 110 € plus the 20 €, and if drilling turns out to be the only way in, you hear that before I start.
What if I ring and nobody picks up?
Try once more a few minutes later, since I may be holding a torch and a drill. If there is still no answer, look for another provider rather than waiting on a phone that has not been answered twice.
